Overview of Creating DNS Zones
Creating a DNS Zone involves several sections which you must follow in order. Key points for each section are described below:
Details
- Identification and Description: Clear and descriptive names help your team to quickly identify the DNS Zone's purpose and configuration details.
- Domain: By specifying a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), Wayfinder automates the creation and management of DNS zones, including child zones for applications and clusters. This simplifies your DNS setup and ensures consistency across environments.
Intended Use
Wayfinder dynamically manages the delegation of child DNS zones for your specified provider by automatically creating child zones for applications or cluster-level packages.
For Private DNS Zones, you'll need advanced experience with your cloud provider's settings, as additional configuration is required to enable Wayfinder to create and manage these zones for private clusters.
Scope
Scoping DNS zones to specific workspaces and stages in Wayfinder provides the following advantages:
- Isolation for Testing and Development: By scoping DNS zones to stages like development or production, you ensure that DNS configurations are isolated, allowing for safe testing without affecting live environments.
- Granular Control: Allocating DNS zones to specific workspaces restricts the creation of child zones to only those workspaces, giving platform engineers greater control over DNS management and reducing the risk of cross-environment misconfigurations.
- Improved Security: Limiting DNS zone configuration to defined stages and workspaces minimises exposure and ensures resources are only available where necessary.
- Simplified Resource Management: Platform engineers can manage DNS zones within the context of specific workspaces and stages, making it easier to organise and track DNS-related resources based on their purpose or lifecycle stage.
Cloud
Wayfinder creates and manages DNS zones only for the cloud providers and regions you specify. In multi-cloud environments, this ensures consistent DNS management across providers, simplifying administration and maintaining uniformity.
Review Configuration Summary
Review a summary of the configuration you've specified and make any ammendmends as needed.
Apply the YAML
View and download the YAML and then apply it using Wayfinder's CLI or via your CI system. Alternatively, you can instruct Wayfinder to apply the YAML immediately.
Delegation
After applying the YAML, you'll update the parent domain (e.g., 'mycompany.com') with the provided name servers using your domain registrar's tools. Wayfinder then handles the DNS delegation verification, notifying you once it's properly configured. This process ensures accurate setup while saving time with automated checks. Just allow time for DNS propagation before returning to verify.
